Homestead homeowner Sarah Sausner

For Sarah Sausner, the best part of owning her home these past 5 years has been the stability she’s appreciated—buffered against the stress of life’s ups and downs and the rising cost of housing in Seattle by her affordable mortgage.

“My first two years of home ownership were about sinking into my community and enjoying the relationships I was making with neighbors who were glad to see the house that sat vacant for the past year, finally occupied, and creating a lot of “life” around it. I was quickly befriended by the kids in the neighborhood who wanted to help build and tend my gardens, hang out with my chickens, and bring honey from my beehives home to their parents."

"In 2011 and 2012 I had serious health emergencies that landed me in the hospital for about a week each time. Though I had insurance, the out of pocket costs were much more than I could afford. I am thankful that because of my affordable mortgage, I was able to pay off my debts over time and never had to worry about losing my home."

"Thanks to Homestead, my situation never got dire the way it does for so many Americans with the bad combination of medical debt and rising housing costs.”

Sarah learned about Homestead while advocating for the Seattle Housing Levy with formerly homeless residents who were housed by the nonprofit she worked for at the time. She currently works in homeless health care as a data and evaluation manager and serves on Homestead’s Board of Delegates.
